Space Coast United recently completed its second of three ”Summer Soccer Camp” sessions at Viera Regional Park where youths can learn a wide variety of soccer skills while having fun.
The first two of the sessions were held from June 6-9 with the second held from June 20-23. Space Coast United is taking registrations for the third week, held from July 11-14. The camps are held from 9:00 a.m.-11:30 for those U7 and up, with those younger participating from 9:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m.
At the camps, youths are under the watchful supervision of trained coaches and a bevy of current SCU players who are able to foster an educational and enjoyable atmosphere for the recreational players.
“These camps are set up for the kids to learn ball mastery and ball manipulation but really to have fun and to make friends and have a good time and not to be in such a structured environment that they’re normally in all day during the school year or with their teams,” said Hugh Cousins, SCU recreational director.
Well-aware of the summertime conditions, Cousins and his staff make sure campers make sure that frequent breaks are taken to ensure that players stay properly hydrated as well, he added.
The four days lead up to a fun “World Cup” tournament within each age grouping on the fourth day of each session, Cousins noted.
“The kids always like the competition so the World Cup where the kids give themselves a name of a country,” Cousins said. “The kids are kind of split up and then they play each other all once. They get points for winning, losses and ties just like any World Cup and it plays all the way down to a final. Normally the other teams that aren’t in it, circle around the final field and cheer on their favorite country and there’s a final. The kids always seem to like that at the end.”
The great news for potential campers is the number of registrants at the camp is unlimited.
“We’re fortunate at Space Coast (United) to have a big staff out here to where if the numbers increase, I just get another trainer,” Cousins added.
