Coming out victorious and advancing to the next round was U11 Elite Girls coached by Greg Santos, U12 Elite Girls coached by Bill Richards, U12 Boys Elite coached by Devin Dean, and U15 Premiere team coached by Mike McGonagle.

Recently in our District Finals one team had their best player out since the preseason with a knee injury and the other team had their two starting center mids out for the season with knee injuries.  Is it that a fluke or a trend?  Actually, it is a fact that female athletes in general have a greater risk for ACL injuries than male athletes.  One study shows that females have a 5 times higher risk than males for an ACL injury.  Other studies peg the risk at somewhere between 2-8 times greater for female athletes.  The bottom line is that this is a real issue and one that needs to be addressed at all levels of coaching and training not only for our female athletes but for all of our athletes.  What are we to do?  I have done a little bit of research and found this resource to be invaluable.  The program is only 15-20 minutes a session 2-3 times a week. I understand that I have proposed everything with the ball or most exercises with the ball, but from my experience and I am sure many if not all of you will agree, this simple ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure.

• Dean Flexton Women’s Head Coach of Holy Trinity made it to the regional semi final round.
• Jerry McCabe Men’s Head Coach of Melbourne made it to the regional semi final round.

The Spring 2012 season will soon be upon us.  I would like to welcome all those returning and new players to the Program.  I would be extremely grateful if you could take care to read the following information that will signpost important dates for the upcoming season and also provide other highly relevant information.

• YDP PRACTICE BEGINS:

• COACH COMMUNICATION: I will be meeting with our volunteer coaches on February 15th & 16th.  They will all be provided with their team rosters for the upcoming season as well as the season coaching plan. I will ask coaches to call every household on their roster. • SAFETY
  • All players are required to wear shin guards during all practices and games.  Socks must cover the shin guards as well.  No shin guards – no practice time or game.  Soccer cleats, a ball and water bottle are also required.
  • The link to our info sheet will give the size ball needed for each age group.
  • If we ever require to cancel practice or games due to inclement weather the Club will attempt to notify all families in sufficient time.
  • The Clubs new texting system will allow us to send text message updates to those who included their cell phone number on the registration application.  This will also be supplemented by email updates.

• A Club representative will always attend the field in the event of a cancellation to ensure that all families are informed.  Any practices having to be cancelled due to inclement weather will be communicated via email and text by 3:00pm on that day for YDP

• CLUB HOTLINE: (321)355-7300 -  We will use this message service if we ever have to close the fields or cancel practice due to inclement weather.  Please put this number on your cell.

• FIRST PRACTICE NIGHT: Tables will be set up at both fields manned by volunteers who will have all team rosters and coach information.  Therefore, if you are unsure where you have to go please see the table.  The YDP field will be sectioned off with numbered signs.  If you have been informed that you are  team one you will be on field one.  Please ensure that you have this information from your coach as this can help make first practice alot smoother.

• VIERA PRACTICES UNTIL MARCH 11TH DAYLIGHT SAVINGS: Practices will take place on Field 6 between Monday to Thursday and Field 4 on Fridays with the Viera U9/U10 Groups.  This will take place between the weeks of Monday, February 27th until Friday, March 9th whereupon, practice will thereafter take place on the regular YDP Field 5 behind the concession Stand at Viera. Field 6 is the closest field next to the car park as you enter the Regional Park.  I have added field map link which shows field numbers.  Field 4 is the field in front of the concession stand.

• UNIFORMS: If your child is a returning player and intends to reuse last seasons uniform you can bypass this section.  However if your child is new to the program please check your registration to ensure you have ordered a new uniform.   Team coaches and managers will receive their uniforms for their players during the 1st or 2nd week of practice.  There will be two weeks of practice before the first game.  The club will provide the sizes requested.   A uniform kit includes: 1 red & 1 white jersey, 1 black shorts and 1 pair of black socks.  Please contact Kara Mehalick (Director of Activities) at karamehalick@cfl.rr.com if you have questions on this.  The Uniforms will be the same style as Fall 2011.

• TEAM PARENT: All teams need a team parent. We will be putting in place a team parent co-ordinator/manager this season to ensure that all teams have one and that they are included in all Club communications.  You can reach Colleen Aravena at YDPTeamManager@spacecoastsoccer.org

• PICTURE DAYS: Picture days have been set for  Saturday, March 17th at Viera Regional Park and Saturday, March 24th at Wickham Soccer Fields.  The Team Parent or Team Coach will arrange the time for this with Kara Mehalick (Director of Activities) at karamehalick@cfl.rr.com.

MICROKICKERS 3 YEARS  & MINIKICKERS 4-5 YEARS

• PARENT MEETING: If your child is participating in the Socatots or MiniKicker programs, I will be contacting you to meet me at the Soccer Pavilion next to the Soccer Concession Stand at Viera Regional Park at 1pm on Saturday, March 10th.  Please see map link for the pavilion.
